Unscheduled downtime on 04.01.2011 between 15:15:00 and 20:00:00
Wed, 05 Jan 2011 10:46:42 +0100
Yesterday there was a blackout in the afternoon. Unfortunately my UPS crashed instead of catching the loss. I'll replace the UPS as soon as possible. Sry for the troubles.

Scheduled downtimes on 07.11.2010 02:00:00 - 05:00:00 for approximately 60 minutes and on 09.11.2010 02:00:00 - 06:00:00 for approximately 30 minutes
Tue, 02 Nov 2010 09:51:57 +0100
My ISP announced two maintenances (hardware and software updates of elementary network components) on 07.11.2010 between 02:00:00 and 05:00:00 local time (+0100) for approximately 60 minutes and on 09.11.2010 between 02:00:00 and 06:00:00 local time (+0100) for approximately 30 minutes, so this server won't be available within this period ;).

Unscheduled downtime on 31.07.2010 between 09:30:00 and 13:00:00
Mon, 02 Aug 2010 13:39:30 +0200
On Saturday morning one of my (quite new) system disks crashed and had to be replaced (and I did a complete fsck as well). Warranty!!!

Partially scheduled downtime between 13.02.2010 and 14.02.2010
Mon, 15 Feb 2010 09:51:24 +0100
As you might have noticed, this server was not reliably available between 13.02.2010 (around 17:00 localtime) and 14.02.2010 (around 01:00 localtime). I had to replace a hard disk (system disk) that crashed 2 weeks ago. Having to open the case anyway, I also replaced the second system disk as it's quite old as well. The old disks has been running 24/7 for around 7 years now; let's go for the next 7 with the brand new ones ;).
I didn't exactly know when I'll find time to replace the disks so I didn't write an announcement. I'm sorry for that and promise improvement ;).

Scheduled downtime on 20.01.2010 00:00:00 - 06:00:00 for approximately 30 minutes
Wed, 13 Jan 2010 17:01:51 +0100
My ISP announced a maintenance (hardware reset in the switching center) on 20.01.2010 between 00:00:00 and 06:00:00 local time (+0100) for approximately 30 minutes, so this server won't be available within this period ;).

Scheduled downtime on 27.11.2009 09:00:00 - 16:00:00 for approximately 240 minutes
Thu, 26 Nov 2009 21:15:55 +0100
I have to do a little hardware maintenance (change 2 case fans). Having to reboot anyway, I'll run a fsck as well (which might last some time for these terrabytes of storagee ;)). The server will be back as soon as it's rebooted.

Scheduled downtime on 21.10.2009 00:00:00 - 06:00:00 for approximately 120 minutes
Fri, 16 Oct 2009 10:47:56 +0200
My ISP announced a maintenance (line-switchover in backbone) on 21.10.2009 between 00:00:00 and 06:00:00 local time (+0200) for approximately 120 minutes, so this server won't be available within this period ;).

Scheduled downtime on 27.09.2009 02:00:00 - 06:00:00 for approximately 30 minutes
Thu, 17 Sep 2009 09:50:58 +0200
My ISP announced a maintenance (software update of an elementary network component) on 27.09.2009 between 02:00:00 and 06:00:00 local time (+0200) for approximately 30 minutes, so this server won't be available within this period ;).

Scheduled downtime on 04.06.2009
Fri, 29 May 2009 15:49:11 +0200
I'm switching my ISP from Q-DSL-home GmbH (QSC private customers) to QSC AG (QSC business customers). In conjunction, the carrier technology is changed as well (from SHDSL to ADSL2+) which necessitates a little hardware alteration. My bandwith upgrades from 2048/1024 to 16384/1024 as well as some nice contractual things (guaranteed availability of 98.5%, guaranteed bandwith higher than my max. old one, a few domains including webspace, traffic, mail, news server and so on, ...). Finally I'll get a new (static) IP (83.236.200.96).
That's why this server is going to be offline on Thursday morning (and maybe noon). The deadline set by QSC for TAL switch is 12:30 pm; experiential it won't last that long and I'm confident that I'll be back online again on 10:00 am.

No lightning.name for me
Wed, 15 Apr 2009 17:56:53 +0200
Well, counted the chickens before they hatched :'(. lightning.name is not available for second level registration ([insert as many swear words as possible here]).
It wasn't easy to figure this out (I thought the notice by whois was provided BECAUSE of my registration and not as a general one). My domain registrar didn't notice the circumstance and replied positivly to my registration request. I think, 'cause the mx-records of the domain ARE set to my registrar but the dnsd-records are not, my registrar itself wasn't even noticed by nic.name automatically. If you ask me (at least it looks like that), there even isn't an automated registration reply system for .name at all.
However (I think I'll never figure out details at all), this place stays home.lightning-online.de only (for the moment) :'(.

home.lightning-online.de is now lightning.name
Thu, 09 Apr 2009 19:22:34 +0200
As the topic says: home.lightning-online.de is now lightning.name
By chance, I got remembered of the .name TLD. I checked lightning.name and it was unregistered. That's the way it got MINE ;).

Why?
Firstly, it is simple, short and efficient (a not that bad condition for domains).
Secondly, it is an international TLD, which isn't that bad for international content as well ;).
Thirdly, it is fairly the only lightning.TLD that has been free for many many many years ;).

The next days (when registration is finished completely), I'm gonna change any DNS-type concerns to make the modification work (as well as all these internal changes I have to do for myself). I'll write a note when anything's done at all.
And don't bother: home.lightning-online.de stays online of course. It will allways be an alias for lightning.name for compatibility reasons (which, in fact, is necessary for hardcoded binary-stuff available (like torrents)). So you've got all time in the world to change any dependencies whenever you like.

Internet Service Provider and DNS Provider problems
Mon, 16 Feb 2009 17:47:45 +0100
As you might have noticed, home.lightning-online.de was not reliably available yesterday and today. My ISP and DNS Provider had problems and therefore unheralded downtimes :(. I'm very sorry for that. These are the circumstances that I can't fix myself and just wait them to do so ;).
Now (rather since around 1pm), the connection should be up and stable again. Some of you might still be unable to resolve home.lightning-online.de, but that's an issue of your DNS provider. In that case you should add some additional (and maybe free) DNSds to your network-config to get suitable name service.

News available
Thu, 27 Nov 2008 12:15:00 +0100
As you can see, a news-site is now available here. Anything about the server itself, things happening on this websites and stuff like that could be read here (did anybody expect something different? ;)). A RSS for the news will be available soon as well.
Following the "language rules" published on the start page, the news are kept in english language with the exception of news concerning the nationalized contents.
